‘지붕 위에 바이올린’
70년대에 우리에게 잘 알려진 뮤지칼에서 나오는 한 장면을 잊지 못한다.
1894-1914 년 사이에 Sholem Aleichem 이 쓴 러시아에 살고 있던 이디쉬
(Yiddish) 계의 전통을 고수 하는 유대인 한 가정에 일어난 스토리를 배경으로
하고 있다.
‘테비 (Tevye)와 딸들’이란 제목의 글에서 Jerry Bock 의 음악 각색으로 1964년
브로드웨이에 상연되어 3000회 기록하였으며 ,그 후에 영화로 만들어 졌다.
유대인 정착지에서 가난한 목부로 생활하는 테비는 다섯 딸들과 생활 하면서
그들의 전통을 지키며 살아 간다.
그러나 커가는 딸들이 남자 친구들이 생기면서 그들의 정착지를 떠나고자 한다.
러시아 ‘차’ ( Tsar) 세계와 유대인 사회와 서로 배척하는 상황에서 고집스럽게
테비는 그의 딸들을 붙잡고자 하지만 , 그 들은 결국 떠나게 된다.
오늘의 노래는 테비의 딸의 결혼식을 전통적으로 치뤄지는 온 동네의 잔치의
배경으로 , 이제는 다 성장한 그들의 아들 딸이 혼례를 맞는 감격으로 회상하는
장면이다.
그들의 전례에 따라 바닥에 놓인 유리 컵을 발로 깨면서 한 쌍의 부부로
새로운 세계에 발을 내 딛는다.
