(Suffering 고난, 고통)

* It is only the strong who are strengthened by suffering; the weak are made weaker. (강한 사람만이 고난을 통해 더 강해진다. 약한 사람은 더 약해진다)

* Happiness is not a reward-it is a consequence. Suffering is not a punishment-it is a result. (행복은 보상이 아니라 필연의 결과이다, 고통은 벌이 아니라 당연한 결말이다)

* It requires more courage to suffer than to die. (고난을 감내하는 것은 죽음보다 더한 용기를 필요로 한다)

* Great souls suffer in silence. (위대한 영혼은 침묵속에서 고통을 감내한다)

* To be born is to suffer;to grow old is to suffer; to die is to suffer; to be tried what is not loved is to suffer; to endure what is distasteful is to suffer. In short, all  the results of individuality, of separate self-hood, necessarily involve pain or suffering. (태어남도 고통이요, 늙음도 고통이다. 죽음도 고통이요, 사랑도 고통이요, 참음 또한 고통이다.  인간의 삶에 아픔과 고통을 피할 수는 없다)

* We need to suffer that we may learn to pity. (우리는 동정심을 배우기 위해 고난의 경험이 필요하다)

* In suffering one learns to pray best of all. (사람은 고난을 통해 기도하는 법을 배운다)

* We, by our sufferings, learn to prize our bliss. (우리는 고난을 통해 받은 축복에 감사하는 법을 배운다)

   (Sin 죄)

* Sin is a state of mind, not an outward act. (죄란 밖으로 드러난 행위가 아니라 내 안의 마음 상태를 말한다)

* The wages of sin is death. (죄의 삵은 사망이다)

* Sin is, essentially a departure from God. (본질적으로,  죄란  하나님으로부터의 이탈이다)

* Sin is man's declaration of independence of God. (죄란 인간의 하나님에 대한 독립선언이다)

* All sin is a kind of lying. (죄란 모두가 일종의 거짓이다) 



* Our sense of sin in in proportion to our nearness to God. (우리는 하나님 곁에 얼마나 다가섰느냐에 따라 죄에 대해 그만큼 더 민감해진다) 

* One leak will sink a ship,; and one sin will destroy a sinner. (배 밑의 작은 틈새가 배를 가라앉히듯 마음 속 죄는 우리를 파괴시킨다)

* Sin. Rub out the first and last letters, and you have I- or carnal self - the root of sin. (Sin 이라는 단어에서 첫째 글자와 끝의 글자를 지우면 죄의 뿌리인-  I(나) - 즉, 내 육적 자아만 남게 된다.

* Sin has four characteristics: self-sufficiency instead of faith, self-will instead of submission, self-seeking instead of benevolence, self-righteousness instead of humility. (죄에는 4가지 특징이 있다. 믿음보다 자기 만족, 순종보다 자기의 뜻, 자비보다 자기사랑, 겸손보다 자기의 의)

* The recognition of sin is the beginning of salvation. (구원은 자기 죄에 대한 인식으로 부터 시작된다)

* A sin confessed is half forgiven. (죄는 고백할 때 이미 절반은 용서받은 것이다)

*There are only two kinds of men: the righteous who believe themselves sinners: the rest, sinners, who believe themselves righteous. (인간은 자신이 죄인이라 생각하는 의인과 의인이라 생각하는 죄인의 두 부류로 나눌 수 있다.)

* We are all sinful. Therefore whatever we blame in another we shall find in our own bosoms. (인간은 모두 죄성을 지니고 있다. 그러기에 타인을 향한 비난을 스스로의 가슴속에서도 발견한다)

* Sin is too dull to see beyond hilself. (죄는 너무 감각이 둔해 좀처럼 죄된 자신 밖을 보지 못한다)

* Sin is first a simple suggestion, then a strong imagination, then delight, then assent. (죄는 처음에는 작게 시작하여, 점점 강렬한 상상을  하며, 즐기는 단계를 지나, 마침내 당연한 것으로 여긴다) 

   (Hell 지옥)

* A guilty conscience is a hell on earth, and points to one beyond. (죄에 눌린 마음은 이 세상의 지옥이다. 또한 그것은  저 편 지옥을 향한다)

* Hell is paved with priests' skulls. (지옥으로 가는 길은 성직자들의 해골로 가득 차 있다)

* What is hell? I maintain that it is suffering of being unable to love. (지옥이란 무엇인가? 사랑조차 할 수 없는 그런 비참한 마음은 아닐까?)

* Hell is paved with good intentions. (지옥으로 가는 길은 선의로 가득 차 있다)

* Hell is paved with good intentions and roofed with lost oportunities. (지옥으로 가는 길은 선의로 가득 차 있다. 그리고 그 지붕들은 실행 못한 기회들로 뒤덮여있다) 

* The way to Hell's a seeming Heav'n. (지옥으로 가는 길은 천국 길처럼 보인다)

* Self-love and the love of the world constitute hell. (자기사랑, 그리고 세상사랑이 지옥을 만든다)

* The road to Hell is easy to travel. (지옥으로 가는 여행길은 쉽다)

* A man by persistent wrongdoing may create within himself a quenchless inner hell. Its fires will burn. Its lambent flames quietly and slowly will eat him with pain and despair. He is not only on his way to hell. He carries it within his own bosom.(나쁜 행실을 계속하는 자는 자기 안에 꺼지지 않는 지옥불을 만들어 스스로를 지진다. 그 불길은 조용히, 그리고 서서히 자신을 고통과 절망으로 태워간다. 그는 그  불길을 가슴에 품은 채  보다 큰 지옥을 향해 나아간다)
