대총회의 화잇 재단에 가면 화잇이 묵시중에 들었던 큰 성경이 전시되어 있다.
하몬가의 family Bible 인데 18 파운드가 넘는다.
병약했던 17세의 엘렌이 묵시 중에 이 성경을 한 손으로 높이 쳐 들고
30분 이상 들고 있었고
눈으로 보지 않고 손가락으로 해당되는 성경절을 찾아 가리켰다고도 했다.
이 이야기는
화잇의 선지성을 증명해주는 초자연적인 증거로 아직도 즐겨 제시되고 있다.
큰 성경 이야기가 재림교회안에서 들려지기 시작한 것은 1880년대 후반이라고 한다.
그 이야기가 처음으로 기록된 것은 1892년이다.
이 이야기는 주로 재림교회 역사를 최초로 쓴 러프보로우 목사를 통해서 알려졌다.
러프보로우는 역사가라기 보다는 'hagiography' (성인전, 칭송 중심의 기록) 를 쓴 사람이다.
엘렌 화잇이나 제임스 화잇의 기록 중에
엘렌이 묵시중에 큰 성경을 들었다는 말은 찾을 수 없다.
제임스 화잇이 그의 자서전에서 하몬 가의 큰 성경을 언급했으나 엘렌이 그것을 묵시 중에 들었다는 말은 없다.
엘렌 화잇의 최초의 자전적 기록인 Sketch of the Christian Experiences and Views of Ellen White 에는
자신이 묵시 중에 성경절이 적힌 금 글씨로 된 카드를 보았다고 했다. 묵시가 끝난 후에 큰 성경을 가져다 달라고 하고, 그 성경을 펴서 묵시 중에 카드에서 본 성경절을 찾았다는 언급이 있다.
And while at family prayers one morning, the power of God began to rest upon me, and the thought rushed into my mind that it was mesmerism, and I resisted it. Immediately I was struck dumb, and for a few moments was lost to everything around me. I then saw my sin in doubting the power of God, and that for so doing I was struck dumb, and that my tongue should be loosed in less than twenty-four hours. A card was held up before me, on which was written in gold letters the chapter and verse of fifty texts of Scripture. After I came out of vision, I beckoned for the slate, and wrote upon it that I was dumb, also what I had seen, and that I wished the large Bible. I took the Bible and readily turned to all the texts that I had seen upon the card. I was unable to speak all day. Early the next morning my soul was filled with joy, and my tongue was loosed to shout the high praises of God. After that I dared not doubt, or for a moment resist the power of God, however others might think of me.
학자들은 큰 성경 이야기가 열성 신자들 사이에 퍼진 전설이라고 이해한다.
물론 교단과 화잇 재단은 이런 이해를 배격하고 그것이 실제로 일어났던 일이라는 주장을 고수하고 있다.
